Sports Law

Stephen Miller leads MacRoberts' Sports Law team, having led Scotland's first dedicated Sports Law Unit from its institution for 10 years at his previous firm.

He specialises in sports administrative and disputes cases, and has great experience of employment disputes in sports, having acted for dismissed managers and assistant managers for many years (e.g. Ian Munro - Raith Rovers FC, Tommy McLean - Hearts FC, Eamonn Bannon - Falkirk FC, Mark Bowen - Birmingham City FC).

In January 2005, Stephen was appointed as an SFA Independent Legal Chairman and he is also a Member of the Sport Resolutions Panel of Arbitrators - Chairpersons List.

He is the author of the Chapter on Judicial Review in "Sport and the Law: the Scots perspective"  (2000)

MacRoberts understands the regulatory dimensions of sport and is well-placed to assist with disputes, given our strong and established reputation in dispute resolution.

In addition, on the insolvency side, Alan Meek - head of our Corporate Recovery Group - acted for the administrator of Livingston Football Club Ltd when that company was placed into administration in the summer of 2009. Alan assisted the administrator in negotiations with the SFL and in connection with the sale of the Company to a consortium of investors. The administration also involved a successful company voluntary arrangement allowing the company to come back out of administration and take its place as a continuing member of the Scottish Football League.
